The types of discrimination Black Midlanders faced are not dissimilar to what was happening around the country. However, people in places like Saginaw and Detroit experienced other discriminatory practices as well. Redlining and urban renewal plans prevented Black people from having opportunities that their white neighbors had, and that led to a racial wealth gap that still affects families today.
